Hardly anyone suspects that palms and other subtropical plants from the Mediterranean area and other warmer parts of the world could also thrive without winter protection in Central Europe north of the Alps. In general, the Rhineland and the Central European wine-growing areas are believed to be the warmest or mildest areas of Central Europe. Heligoland, the only German open sea island, 70 kilometers off the German mainland in the North Sea, has been disregarded.
Heligoland is famous for its red sandstone cliffs and the healthy mild climate for people suffering from allergies. Successful tests were already made with windmill palms and Mediterranean and subtropcial plants on this island in the eighties of the last century. Our project is initiated by "exotic" friends and sponsors. If successful, Heligoland would have one more tourist attraction. Even on the well-known flower island Mainau in the Lake Constance windmill palms sometimes require winter protection and the palms are protected by large heated greenhouses built around them. This however isn't necessary on Heligoland.
